You know there are too many sugar types among carbon sources. However, here cost of carbon source very important in enginneering. You know glucose is cheaper than other sugars as C source. Therefore we should talk about cost of sugar. Is it important for you? If cost of sugar not important, you can use other sugars. However, some bacteria can not use all of sugars. For example lactose using bacteria specimes are limited. You should consider this. So, it apperars that glucose and molassses are more logical source for your experiments if you work in laboratory. If you work in full scale, molasses are more logical.

OK, you mean sucrose (synonym saccharose) with formula C12H22O11. It is contained in molasses, too. You can use this sugar without problem. Other substrates which can be used for culturing of bacteria are acetates, starch, alcohols, and many more.

Chingyeh On, we have study the Biomethane Potential of sugar solutions (1-10ºBrix) as a co-substrate in anaerobic digestion of WWTP sludge. We found that the BMP of sugar solutions was around 3 times the BMP of mixed sludge. We found no inhibition effects

You intend to use sugar as carbon source for activitied sludge culturing? It depends on what are you going to do with the sludge. If you want the sludge for nitrogen removal, acetate and ethanol is better than glucose in general. Too many species from bacteria can utilize sugar for fermentation, however, some species with specific function (e.g. syntrophy) can not ferment sugar.

We cannot use alone sugar as a carbon source for microorganisms.

May I know if the purpose of the sludge is for decolorization and mineralization of dye solution, can sugar alone be the main carbon source for acclimatization? On the other hand, the dye solution will act as the main carbon source in which it will replace the previous role of the sugar for the decolorization and mineralization purpose after acclimatization. Is it possible? Thank you. 

You get what you select for.  First "sugar" is too general of a term.  As table sugar was mentioned let's just address sucrose.  Is there a good reason to select microorganisms in the sludge that are specifically sucrose metabolizers and thus deselect for microorganisms that are, say, phenol metabolizers?  If so, go ahead.  If not, then use the substrate(s) of interest, and conditions of interest (pH, salts etc.) to culture the sludge microorganisms.

Yes, agreed Yan Dang, "electron donor" is the issue, not "carbon source".  Note the Bin Qiu article discusses fermentation under anaerobic conditions.  The dye is the electron acceptor, substituting for oxygen.  However, glucose (derived from sucrose) can undergo fermentative degradation and repress other pathways and thus possibly not act efficiently as the electron donor.  You may want to consider other electron donors, such as lactate.

If it can be but is expensive for industrial use, methanol is usually used for being cheaper.

Yes, Methanol, but cost has to be considered.

Ricardo Isla and Hasan Mahdi Al-Khateeb , cost has to be considered, yes certainly. Outside of a research laboratory environment cost must always be considered and balanced against benefit. Defense spending is often an exception, but the rule still stands.
