Looking for an ELISA to measure serum levels of estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone from female rats. Has anyone used Calbiotech or Abcam ELISAs for rat serum? Any other suggestions are also welcomed.
Hi Johanna I did experiments with mice and used the R&D systems' kit for steroid hormone analysis. These kits worked well for both plasma and cultured cells.
Check your institutional rates for LC/MS analyses. It will be more expensive...but considerably more sensitive and accurate. If they don't do it at ECU, let me know and I can put you in touch with the group that measured for me.
I would use LC or GS/mass-spec although ELISA is cheaper and more straightforward. In the end, it depends a little on what is your experiment and how accurate you need to be.
There are several companies or institutes where you can subcontract the measurements by LC/GC-MS. Check always the limit of detection of their system. Especially estrogens in rodents is challenging.
There are several validated methods on EPA and ICCVAMs web site ranging from cell based to ELISA to in vivo. Several are available to researchers at little or no cost. I would start there and see which assay fits your needs best.
