We have an old HPLC composed of a Waters 600E pump and a 410 differential refraction index detector (with built in IEEE488).
We got it a PC with a BUS LAC/E card (half width) and the millenium 32 software.
I got the pump and detector recognized by the equipment, but in the software i couldnt find a way to recognize an external trigger.
The manual of millenium says: "Detectors and system controllers that are not controlled by a Millennium32 system (for example, 2690/2695, 600 Series controller, and GC) require an inject start trigger signal (contact closure) from the injector as each injection occurs. The inject start trigger signal instructs detectors and system controllers to acquire data or run methods."
"Note: Any instrument that is not controlled by the Millennium32 software requires an inject start trigger wire connection (see Section 2.4.4, Injectors)."
2.4.4 says that for the 410 detector, the trigger (contact fromt he manual injector) must be done in the "Chart Mark" and "Dgnd" connector on the back.
I did those connections. When I inject, both the 600E pump and the 410 detector recognizes the injection, but milleniums stays at the "wating for injection" status, until one press the button on the software.
Is it possible what i want? If it is, is it possible with just the 410 and the 600E pump?
I have a 486 UV detector too and a buSAT/in box if it can be done through them (but the idea is just with the 600E and the 410 by themselves).
We gave up on reviving instruments using closed software from instrument vendors.
We have used the Excel-based DAQ2GO system integration tool to revive instruments and also make imeasurement systems from separate modules (pumps, detectors, valves, motors, acrtuators, etc.)
DAQ2GO has complete and open control of analog and digital signals (in and out), so it is easy to control and take data from most any system or assemblage of modules.. There are also complete data treatment packages for several applications (e.g. chromatography, materials testing, polymer analysis). (Excel based) available from them.
I've put several examples in youtube videos on the topic (search "DAQ2GO"), and given several talks at ACS meetings in the last 2 years. Some of the slides are posted on my portion of this site.
In our labs, we are presently working on adding lab automation using a 3 axis gantry with solvent dispensing, weighing, sample pransport and introduction into a fia aparatus using an HPLC valve. All the software is based on Excel and programmable directly on the Excel worksheets. This freed us from the cost and restrictions of instrument vendor software.
@Scot thanks a lot for your help. The ideal scenario would have been see this before buying the PC with millennium software and interface card (which cost us around US$ 6k) but that's already bought. Maybe it would be useful for some old agilent multimeter and oscilloscope we have, that are too old for their current software (benchvue) and that we can only control with an outdated and buggy excel macro. Though they can be controlled with labview, I have no experience enough to make it work adequately without investing a lot of time into it. I'll definitely give it a look later, since we have many old working instrument which are prohibitely expensive to replace and hard to interface/integrate.
For my problem with the trigger recognition in our GPC, I found out that the injection is recognized when measuring samples as "sample set", but had no luck measuring in "single injection" mode which i was using to check that the system was working ok. I don't know if it's a bug or the software is supposed to be that way.
