I believe that in order to answer this question we should consider the symbolic elements that make up Christianity. The Most Holy Trinity is a clear representation of the unifications that Catholicism had to make in order to incorporate pagan religions into the "orthodox doctrine". Sun worship, for example, coincides with the birth of Jesus. The representation of the trinity is a very interesting topic to address. Particularly the version I like the most is this one

I especially like Ruben's answer, because these ideas have to evolve for a reason. If the reason is for the religion to be more compatible with the pagan notions of the day, that sounds credible enough to me.

If you can approach the topic in a way that they are predisposed to comprehend, that already fits in their culture, you're that much further ahead.

After all, what we read about the actual teachings of Christ is not so clear on this subject. It's not like Jesus was ever quoted reciting the Nicene Creed, after all, or anything quite that explicit. These are human constructs, and we should fully expect them to be flawed.

This is not the assumption, it is just a proof. Ask your self, who has created the Universe? Who has created your so beautiful and pleasant health and the power of love ! If there is a God, it is unique. If the partner is a goddess, it will disappear. This reduces the god ontologically to be down to human.

The existence of a unique god would necessitate the possibility of non-contingent events. If that was the case then paradoxically contingency would not be necessary for existence. This would mean if one god could exist they any number of them would be possible.

The existence of humans is possible only because of a bewildering set of contingencies, gods however are there because they are there.

This is surprisingly the same for the universe, it is there because it is there. the Big Bang had no cause so is non-contingent, it is just as unfathomable as an omnipotent god/creator.

Jew, Muslim and Catholic traditions all believe in one God.

On the Catholic side, the Trinity is distinguished as a revealed truth rather than a philosophical inquiry, but St. Thomas would explain the Trinity using the Aristotelian categories of being (in relation to what you call consciousness). In the trinity everything is identified (i.e. all categories are one and the same) except the category of "relation" which is the only difference among the persons, the relation that makes one the Father, or the Son or the Holy Ghost. His treatise of God in his Summa Theologiæ is a good place to go.

Regarding God being one, the Summa again answers many things, but I also advice reading "De ente et essentia" ("On being and essence", especially Joseph Bobik’s Aquinas on Being and Essence: A Translation and Interpretation, Chapters 5 and 6, although the whole book is good).

In basic terms, he details the way in which substances can exist; how essence is different from existence; and how there can only be one being whose essence is the same as his existence (esse tantum).

Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (NOT Mary) is not found anywhere in Scripture, but two phenomena demanded the 1st century Jews who followed Jesus of Nazereth to construct a new world view with this formulation of the God who created the universe from their previous understanding of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel: 1. the uniqueness of Jesus of Nazareth , and 2. the primacy of love.

1. The uniqueness of Jesus is attested to by Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Jews and Muslims interpret him as a great prophet who spoke for the God of Abraham. Jesus understood his own vocation as to enact the inauguration of the kingdom of God, not with force of might, but through love expressed in sacrificial death (Jesus said, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Mark 10:35) His 1st century Jewish followers took what Jesus accomplished with his death on the Cross, and interpreted this in light of his bodily resurrection, when he appeared to them strangely familiar yet not fully recognizable (Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. - John 21:12). They recognized the unique thorough humanness of Jesus, but also recognized that Jesus accomplished what only God could uniquely accomplish, which is the start of New Creation. With this came the genesis of the doctrine of the Trinity, to accommodate this new understanding of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel who created the Cosmos, AND who also is also present the person of the Jesus of Nazareth creating the Cosmos anew with the coming of the Kingdom of God.

2. For Christians, God is love, and what makes us fully human as the image of God is our capacity to love and receive love. If God is love, who did he love before the creation of the Cosmos? This poses a problem to unitarian doctrines. With the doctrine of the Trinity, where God eternally exists as three persons in the one God, God has always shared the love between the three persons of his nature, and out of the fullness of that love, God created the cosmos, in particular humans, to love and receive love in His image. That is why the essential metaphor for the relationship between God and humans is in the language of intimacy, Father and Son. The relationship between Jesus Christ and His Church is Bridegroom and Bride. Intimacy and love is primary in life because it is primary in God.

In monotheism, the one God is wholly outside of nature (wholly outside of time and space, infinite, wholly other), yet the infinite God enters the finite world to create and to provide and to judge, while still remaining infinite. In short, the Infinite becomes Finite while still remaining Infinite. This is the mysterious riddle of all existence.

To express that mystery, one requires an unchanging, infinite God who moves and enters the finite world, while still being divine and wholly other. Such a mystery requires a monotheistic God with some kind of divisions, parts, persons that are nevertheless still infinite and divine. Absolute monotheism without distinct parts within God does not express the mysterious reality of the infinite becoming finite while remaining infinite. Something like 'trinitarianism' is needed to express such a God who is transcendent and imminent at the same time - the 'intimacy of the divine infinity,' wholly other yet right next to your ear and mouth.

Interestingly the Klingons do not have a single god but do have an afterlife where warriors go after an honorable death to fight endless battles. This is the fabled Stovokor. Klingons who die a dishonorable death are transported to a netherworld called Gre-thor.

While the Kingons do not have a monotheistic religion they do have a single prophet like figure called Kahless who is believed to be the founder of their empire.

It is quite remarkable that with such a violent and realtively primative culture that they managed to develop warp drive and interstellar navigation.

As Christianity developed it found itself with a quandary early on. It had been loosely associated with the highly messianic Essene sect of Judaism, and after the fall of Jerusalem it had to reinvent itself. In doing so it eventually aligned Neo-platonic thought, although it also had some associations with other Greek philosophies. But one key factor that is largely ignored is that it developed largely in a Greco-Roman and Parthian context. Further, both these cultures came out of an Indo-European language group background.

Now what is unique about an Indo-European language background is that of all language groups, it appears that only in the Indo-European one were all historic religions Trinitarian. There is no evidence for a monotheistic Indo-European language group religion. In attempting to survive as a religion in such a culture or cultures, how could one not expect Christianity to evolve into a Trinitarian religion? Islam and Judaism, while facing cultural problems, did evolve in cultures that had historic monotheistic religions.

With respect to and in support of the orthodox Trinitarian view, I would submit that the inner witness of the Holy Spirit within the Christian believer's life, referred to by William Lane Craig as the veridical working of the Spirit, and by Alvin Plantinga as the internal instigation of the Spirit, is sufficient to confirm to the Christian believer that the Trinitarian view is indeed correct.

Your question is indeed interesting, that what reason to be given to defend the belief and justify the Monotheism (how is the Monotheism to be concieved).

If one looks carefully at early Christianity, it is not clear that it was monotheistic. There are some indicators that it was more henotheistic at first, and even after it became clearly monotheistic, it had versions that were strict monotheism as well as binarian as well as trinitarian. The binary option fell out of favor and left just strict monotheism and trinitarianism. Likewise ir is unclear if Judaism was monotheistic or henotheistic during the BCE period and into the 1st century CE.
