We have developed from a zygote, which eventually became a diploid cell. In that way, we are a cell. So strange, we have evolved and acquired distinguished features that we can not even count. Just think, we were once a cell.
We all developed from a single cell. Just as every other multi-cellular organism has. That is the remarkable process of embryonic development. If you believe that a higher power, such as a God, created human beings, then I would simply say that evolution was God's way of creating life and humans. There is no contradiction, as most established religions do not dispute evolution.
We were never a single cell. When there was only a single cell we were not human being that time and hence not we. Because "we" is all about consciousness and that developed after brain maturation.
Hey, thats a great topic to discuss. As a zygote we are infact a single cell. As Ernst Haeckel says "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny". Zygote symbolizes that we evolved from single celled (acellular) organisms. Things become more interesting, when we think that this zygote undergoes a series of divisions to form daughter cells each destined to perform a specific function in an adult organism. I would like to think of human body (or any multicellular organism) as a large community of cells in which there are several groups (of cells) specialized to perform a specific function. Evolution is such an enigmatic thing.
Well Rajpal, that is likely more of a philosophical approach to the question. I think, therefore I am. However, as you trace evolutionary history back, humans once developed from a single celled organism, the most basic unit of life. I suspect the question relates more to development where a single cell divides, differentiates into a very complex organism with a vast arrangement of cells. To think how evolution has lead to development of all these different parts that work together to make us conscious beings is a bit overwhelming. Even the best mechanical engineer is incapable of designing machines that come close to what evolution has done by error and natural selection. Of course, we are now adding in epigenetics to help explain evolution and cell differentiation.

Ya ..we were once a cell..... developed from a zygote..a small variation in genetic make up makes an individual unique. In addition to that a mutation and crossing over adds to variation and diversity.
