This is an area that deeply concerns me, and if drugs are causing other effects then we must expect further pandemics. This is therefore not simply an issue of bacterial microbiota but a greater issue surrounding the industrialisation of medicine and its effects on resistance, and, with psychotropic drugs, the occurance of impairments over time.
Gut bacteria harbor enzymes and pump out other molecules that can influence how medications are activated or broken down. One example is the Parkinson's drug levodopa (L-dopa), for which studies have suggested these interactions help explain differences in efficacy among individuals.
