Does ranking in this fashion lead to more students attempting to enrol in the best universities, thereby increasing this trend?
Does it only focus on universities' that are very well resourced failing to acknowledge those with better teachers?
Does it neglect the role of funding, as few poor students may attempt to enrol at more expensive, higher-ranking universities?
Are they unintentionally increasing the wealth gap in this fashion?
Can we simply accept ranking methodology?
The point of Oxford and Cambridge Universities is not only the prestige and status of becoming a student there, but the contacts made to ensure success in life. The privileged thereby become more privileged.

Sometimes, it makes some universities be on their toes to aspire to be among the best universities across the globe but on the other side makes those already among the top flight universities to brag and proud.
I do think you're basically right but, Syed, but I went to Russell group universities (2 in fact) and I did not come from a rich family. But times have changed and perhaps now high-ranking universities merely underpin an increasing gap between rich and poor.
But what about state competition, with Chinese universities gaining increased reputations?
From what I know this ranking competition has gone out of hand, becoming meaningless as a result. I find several institutions with notable experts and researchers of great repute whose universities have low rankings. My conclusion if you hear good words about some institution go for it, don't need to try to go to an expensive, high-ranking one. Save your money!
The trouble with some of those high rankings, you come to a class and the prof sends you out because you are female!. The university pretends they don't know about it! Too bad you already registered.
