Academic training is lengthy but often resolves into specific ways to present knowledge and information. This requires ability but does it require great ability.
When I did my first degree I noted then that perception and understanding seemed to take second place to the right way to write essays, make references and accomplish citations, but this I thought, though justified, was a skill only.
Is academia just a way of presenting knowledge and does it therefore deserve its status?
Personally I think academia is more than just presenting knowledge but rather it entails knowledge contribution, knowledge sharing & knowledge dissemination including discovery of new knowledge / truth, falsify old theories / understanding, continuously improve our new understanding / knowledge through empirical evidence etc.
Between researchers you need an international way to quickly distribute new knowledge, this is why you have to learn the rules for scientific writing.
Some need to read the methods, some the abstract, some the conclusion and some the result. By following certain rules it makes the procedure easier for the reader.
Agreed Beatrice, but really isn't that a skill and are those more adept at these skills preferenced?

But to achieve this, other participants, such as industry and government, must be also be prepared to take on new responsibilities. No ready-made model exists to guide these changes; they will require both creativity and the willingness to engage in thoughtful dialogue, both within and outside universities.

Notably, the gathering and presenting knowledge is the principle responsibility of the scientists ; however, it has been claimed that presenting knowledge should be based on the ethical principle of truth. But in reality, this is not the only goal of the academia because there are other objectives that it should strive for. In point of fact, besides the dissemination of knowledge, the goal of the academia should be to provide the people of the world with fairer, more democratic societies whereby competition is replaced by cooperation.
Not only presenting knowledge, skills will be developed on, team working nature can be learnt by all and proper progression can be enhanced..
Yes, it does and deserves its status at all parts of the knowledge..

A good understanding of research appraisal and sharing the knowledge is desirable for professional growth but should come out of commitment and passion and not mere compulsion.
New Hippocratic oath or The physicians pledge also adds that one should share the knowledge for the benefit of patient and community.
Besides it , being good at core skills is of paramount importance and should be pursued with dogged determination. Good presenting skills can never supplement clinical acumen, skills and aptitude and may only complement it.

Freud's ideas are beautifully written but not in modern presentation style. Again, as with many celebrated philosophers retaining thereby I believe greater originality. Normative presentation squeezes out the originality. Or does it? Squeezes out certainly the beauty and art.

Brad, its worth considering the nature of academic knowledge. I often felt at Uni (First Degree) that presentation took priority over ideas.

There is a need to keep delicate balance between knowledge acquisition, knowledge dissemination and knowledge presentation; but sadly , more emphasis is on presentation, like learning essential skills of presenting the knowledge is so important that actual knowledge acquisition is left behind and it has transformed our educational system into lifeless one.
Nazia, that's my worry and that's precisely what I saw happening in my first degrees. Getting everything right, in its place got the students the 2.1 and firsts not evidence of understanding. Any ideas were squashed.
