Camera lucida or microscope drawing tubes are unavailable, and would be expensive if found and freighted to the developing world like Nigeria. Therefore, many parasite images obtained from light microscopy are difficult to publish as illustration of diagnosis and ultimately lost to record.
Surely, alternatives must be readily available since the Camera lucida is often described as archaic even when many Nigerian scientists have not handled one before. Published records buttress this assertion.
One will gladly apply alternatives to many on-going studies.
I can imagine that your with your background and working at a Federal Institute would be able to get a funding from an UN organization to acquire a proper photomicrographic camera system - in that case, I would suggest Nikon.

I like what michael has suggested. In deed one of the good DIY systems.
Upon looking at your question, i went around looking for some basic materials using which i was able to project an image of a grid whose line width and distance between two lines was 50 micron on to a screen. Based on your question, i am assuming that you should have a compound microscope at your disposal. All you have to do is get a lens put it on the eyepiece or remove the eyepiece and project the image on a screen wherever you want it to be. Just make sure the light source should be of good intensity. A smart phone LED torch light works just fine. I was able to get very good resolution images in an ambient light inside a lab. You could do better just by keeping the setup in the dark room.
