I am using mammalian cell lines and I was asked by the ethics board to add an "Ethical Consideration" section on my protocol. I thought ethics guidelines only apply to use of animal or human subjects. Thank you :)
There is also considerations in using human embryonic stem cell (hES) lines and hybridoma cells to produce antibodies for human therapy. In hES cell use, we need to do that because hES cells have pluripotency to be differentiated into many tissues. In hybridoma cell culture for human therapeutic purpose, some of serum-free media use peptides derived from bovine serum which would concern of high ethical stand-points of the culture or value in certain societies. I understand you have many opinions of Catholics involved in IRB regulation set-up. Some other people may feel that is pompous attitude.
You could describe that your cells are established long time ago and haven't got any developmental potency and no possibility to be cross contaminated to human subject, etc.
If they are cancer cell lines, then describe not matching of dev potency and simply dies even if get into the human body.
Often people who are involved or makes the IRB documents or maintaining strict ethical standards are fall into deep black hole of 'ethical dilemma', by the contradicting two aspects of ethical consideration. Religious group and people studying social sciences tends to commit this silly decisions. You will see more as you take your profession.
Please read it and share it with everyone. It is talking about prosumer also for the first time in this book we talk about magic and its power in product design. It is talking also about future of consumers .I request you put the link of book on your page and your school website for your students.
I would be surprised if the ethics board were specifically asking for ethical considerations on the use of mammalian cell lines… That would mean that the board is treating animal stem cells and human stem cells as equal, in dignity, what would be particularly odd. Therefore, I wonder if the board’s inquiry is not only about the procurement of the cells, together with a bureaucratic requirement to fulfill that specific field on the file… In this case, the answer would be just descriptive and not a justification.
