Term 'dispersant' is often used when stabilizer is meant. There is even a quot that the only dispersant is energy. I do not agree on that point. To act as dispersant and to act as stabilizer are 2 things, however, difficult to study dispersing and stabilizing separately.

Before testing stability (stabilization) agglomerates have to be dispersed. If they lack stabilization it is difficult to judge whether they were effectively dispersed in first place.

There is experimental evidence that break-up of solid bridges of oxides can be achieved at lower energy input in acidic or basic media.

We found that 'best' solvents for dispersing of carbon black depends on degree of energy input, suggesting that there is indeed chemical dispersing effect.

Therefore it is thought that term dispersant is justified.
