Traditional accounts of negative mental health consequences for elite athletes focus on the titration of training loads as an explanation for the link between psychopathology and sports performance (Raglin, 2001). These models may not fully account for a range of issues including organizational stress, culturally specific and sport related issues (e.g., eating disorders in aesthetic sports), identity issues and coaching climate problems (e.g., negative perfectionism and unrealistic goals in ego orientated environments) to name but a few. What other models can be used to explore mental health antecedents in elite sport and how can we prevent and minimize the prevalence and incidence of these issues?
