In heterologous expression studies, I am reading through examples of plant transporters which are produced in yeast.

I was under the impression that proteins destined for the cell membrane required an upstream sequence or "tag". Is this true? Studies do not mention which signal sequence is used, only the cDNA. A membrane signal or signal cleavage site is not mentioned in the original vector details. What's going on here? cDNA is coding DNA only, it cannot also instruct the protein where to go.
