Are pulsed field gradient, PFG-NMR and magic angle spinning, MAS-NMR facilities available in ordinary instruments or are different instrumental setups? I mean is it possible to achieve these two facilities within a single, ordinary NMR spectrometer?
Yes it is possible. The details are in the type of setup you are requiring. A standard wide-bore NMR can accomodate a PFG or high-efficiency gradient system. You can consult your vendor application support on this. A narrow-bore MAS probe can be accommodated in this setup. It is possible to build this into a combined probe for a wide bore system. A custom probe like this would require a specialty company or something that is build in a university lab.
Dear Ananda, today almost all NMR spectrometers have PFG capabilities. Even lower field instruments such as 400 MHz instruments will have a probe with PFG. The strength of the gradients is good enough for regular spectroscopy and some diffusion experiments.
MAS NMR can be done in standard bore or wide bore systems. To do NMR you need a dedicated MAS probe, a controller for the pneumatic for the spinning and potentially high power amplifier than the standard ones in the instrument,.
