I want to prove, as reported by local farmer in the field test, that biopesticide can repel the rice bug, Leptocorisa oratorius. Biopesticide is composed of zingiberaceae plants such as kunyit (Curcuma longa), kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.), temulawak (Curcuma zanthorrhiza), temuireng (Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb), bangle (Zingiber purpureum Roxb.), dan puyang (Zingiber aromaticum Vahl.). Then, they are fermented for about 1 month. The odor is so strong which (assumed) can repel the insect. But, according to my experiment using binary choice, the insect walks towards biopesticide and sometimes control site. Folks, I really need your suggestion to explain what is goin on. This looks like an exam question for a Statistics 101 course. You need more background in experimental design and the interpretation of results. Added to that I would test one ginger species at a time. Even then, you must consider that even a single species could contain both attractants and repellents.
Thank you so much for your input, Sir Alan. The evaporation is the main reason to this problem. I used to use huge chamber (dimension: 1x1x1meter) to place the biopesticide. Now, I use 500 ml bottle as a chamber. This morning, I found out almost all insects walked to site control. But unfortunately, some insects gave long responses, especially pregnant insect (which is female insect). Do you think that pregnant condition affect olfaction response?
