As public research is the dominant model, it is interesting to notice that private lucrative publication is the major dissemination channel in academia.
I'm interested in studies about the willingness to share among the researchers.
Understanding why the expensive and in english journal model still impedes knowledge production and dissemination is key in many field of study.
The study of academian capitalism, with journal publications as currencies could help if economist were to see this interrogation.

Dear Heather Douglas , I agree with you that in order to enable dissemination, someone somehow has to pay. In France most of the research is somehow 'socialized' and if I remember well my readings about this topic, it's a worldwide trend (not a frenchy originality). However, I'm surprised with you presenting it as follow : it's either the author or the reader that has to pay. I'd like to understand it if you're very attached to it (by the way if you could rate for a start your attachment to this belief, let's say on a 0-10 scale). If you could develop the reasons why you hold this belief, it could be helpful. The "very substantial fee" is also of interest. If you want to express more about it, feel free.
Dear Heather Douglas , I believe we should express factually on the matter. How much do you rate this "price" (and on what ground do you assess this price) ? Do you consider this cost as an obstacle to dissemination ? If you wish, you can follow the list you composed "the journal's expenses - hosting the internet site, printing and circulating hard copies - some journals still do this - marketing their product, and some journals pay the editor etc." Regarding this list of expenses, please express your reasons for "The readers MUST pay the costs of paying for [it]".
