To characterize my synthesized block copolymer PAA -b-PNIPAM (PAA=Polyacrylic Acid), I need to take the NMR test. DMSO was the only solvent I found on literature. But I couldn’t get it dissolved in it.
I would appreciate it if someone points me out any alternative solution.
I have also tried CDCl3. Didn’t work either.
To get PA-b-PNIPAM, I have hydrolyzed PtBA-b-PNIPAM. (PtBA=Poly tert butyl acrylate)
Depending on the used copolymerization method, types of initiators and cross-linkers, and cross-linking density of the prepared copolymer, the dissolution ability can be varied in different media. Generally, at high cross-linking density of the copolymers can not be dissolved in any solvent. You may try to dissolute your copolymer in deuterated H2O, DMF, and dioxin, if not dissolve then can try solid state NMR.
Is the PAA block polyacrylamide or polyacrylic acid? If polyacrylamide, I agree that D2O is the first option. If polyacrylic acid, you can boost solubility with a tiny amount of base - I would recommend anhydrous sodium carbonate as it will not add any H.
