Hi everybody
I have a big contamination problem with fungi in my microalgal culture room and we have tried cleaning and disinfecting everything with thymol 5 %; we constantly clean, however the problem is persistent. I know the problem is the room, cause when I grow the microalgae or plants outside the frequency of contamination is lower.
Any advice or help will fully appreciated!

Yes, UV tubes may be installed in the room dedicated for microbiology work. The floor need to be regularly moped with a disinfectant {Cedex etc.]. Also you may fumigate the room with formalin [Add a few grains of potassium permanganate] overnight. This treatment is irritant but very effective in inactivating the microbial spores.

I hope you have a UV bacteriological lamp installed in the room. Usually such a room should be sterilized with UV rays before and after work. It is also important to install a laminar chamber with horizontal air flow (various types can be found on the market).

Limpia y sanitiza todo el cuarto. Despues sella las salidas, incrementa a 37C la temperatura, coloca aprox 10 mL de formalina al 37% (muy irritante utiliza respirador). Lo puedes dejar por 48-72 horas. Ventila el cuarto y enjuaga con agua esteril. Repite el procedimiento dos veces por semana hasta eliminar la contaminacion. Trata el area como si fuera area aseptica (bioseguridad-biocontencion).

UV is good at killing things that are on the surface exposed to the UV light; it can't get into the shadows. I use Hypochlorite (Clorox) in water to sanitize surfaces. that together with a biological filter, can keep the contaminant level down, but you will still need to clean on a regular schedule.

Fumigation, is the best methods for eradicate the fungal air born pathogen (spores)...in your culture room. you could try this quit effective method, (Formaldehyde/ Potassium permaganite)...

UV light is not efficient, fumigation with Formaldehyde will help sterilize your room, but u have to take good care .
