Any differences between develop Statistical Shape Modelling with and without landmarks ?

I am try to develop a statistical shape model for a set of humerus models.

From the previous paper, some used the bony landmarks to develop the correspondence between vertices between different bones. However, the other used corresponding algorithm such as ICP or CPD. The bony landmarks were not used by this approach.

I wonder which one has more benefits when developing SSM ?
