Does Antibiotic overuse in Farming contribute significantly to Antibiotic Resistance in Human Populations?
What would the effect be on the industry, if the antibiotic usage is cut drastically?
Is there a financial benefit to using antibiotics in this way? Why are we sitting with this problem?
Rampant use of antibiotics has been solemnly creating troubles these days all over the globe. There is no question to deny that, as being a part of same globe we cannot be an exception to it. Those antibiotics used in animals and plants literally can be passed to the humans by the consumption of animals and crops as "we are what we eat"! It may result three possible consequences:
1: direct infection with resistant bacteria from an animal source
2: breaches in the species barrier followed by sustained transmission in humans of resistant strains arising in livestock, and
3: transfer of resistance genes from agriculture into human pathogens.
Thus, extensive use of antibiotics does result no benefits but harms to the health of consumers by elevating the risks of antibiotic resistant. However, for industries without using antibiotics their products may not thrive due to the infections or quantitatively and qualitatively their yields will decline if they do not use antibiotics in their products. Ultimately, industries have to bear financial loss.
Therefore, rational use of antibiotic will be the judicious option or we must develop the alternative tools (Organic plants development programs in huge scale) to cope with these problematic issues.
I completely agree with Mr. Sujan. Briefly, excessive and non-medical usage of antibiotics leading to tremendous increase in AMR rate in most of the developing countries. Ultimately the antibiotics used in animals and plant (food)s are posing threat to humans. Especially zoonotic pathogens developing high level resistance to most of the drugs, infections associated with these MDR strains will require prolonged treatment with increased morbidity and mortality rate.
