Yes. Yes. And, yes! The most fabulous book that was ever recommended to me by a professor while a communication undergrad was by Berger and Luckmann (1967), The Social Construction of Reality: A Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge. From this magnificent piece of work, it is possible to obtain leads for most of the erosive ills of society, along with most interesting classical groundwork to support research! It is available on Amazon.
I don't think journalism has deteriorated, per say, as much as it is evolving and changing form. In fact, journalism has improved in many ways. In recent history, the utilization of data journalism in order to tell better stories has elevated the caliber of reportage of many news organizations, leading to the launch of separate departments within organizations such as the Washington Post, for instance, which focus on statistics. Incorporating visualizations into stories has also paved the path for several journalists to win prestigious awards, including Pulitzers.
I think the spread of misinformation, a concern that has become increasingly prevalent in the past few decades or so, has a tendency to obscure meaningful, thorough journalism. Journalists live by strong ethical codes, and sensationalism, sugarcoating and falsehoods are antithetical to these beliefs. Although false information campaigns by political organizations, for instance, have gradually ceded a distrust of journalism into part of the American public, one must keep in mind that this is not at all reflective of actual reporters, and that tabloids meant to mislead and investigative journalism meant to inform should not be conflated. Following a variety of trusted sources and journalists from across the political spectrum can allow for a diversity in thought, without necessarily compromising the quality of the news diet readers consume. Misinformation is not journalism.
