Animal-derived component free media to culture of neuroblastoma cell line

Hi everybody,

I'm working about alternatives to animal testing in neurotoxicology. I'm using a neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y) and I wanna replace a fetal bovine serum (FBS) for a cell culture.

I found some medias without FBS, but many of them have animal proteins. I just found one animal-derived component free (ADCF) media to neuroblastoma from Sigma-Aldrich (link is bellow), but this media is really expensive to use routinely in a lab. I'm searching a ADCF media that can replace the FBS, but economically practicable.

Are anybody here who work about ADCF media? Can you help me?

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your enthusiasm. I think animal testing and animal-origin product just will be replaced when animal-free methods be cheaper that current methods.

I read in the abstract book of EUSAAT 2010 - ESTIV 2010 - Linz 2010 a abstract by Dr. Filipic and his group entitled "Cultivation of different mammalian cell lines in a serum-free chemically defined medium". Their work sees very interesting and Dr. Filipic gentilly offer to test the medium on neuroblastoma cell line. This work needs to continue and to be available to reproduce in other labs and to be producted standadized and cheap. (link to abstract book is bellow, and the abstract by Dr. Filipic is in page 41).

We can use the composition of the TNB 100 medium (serum-free media) by Biochrom to develop a ADCF media, because TNB 100 medium has bovine proteins. The link to TNB 100 medium specifications is bellow too.

About fund for the research and works in this field, we can to think with Dr. Filipic too. Morever think the knowledge need to be free to facilite the animal use replacement.
