Dear All,

Hope you are all doing well.

As part of my research, I need to investigate the corrosion behaviour of Medical Ti alloy (Ti6Al4V) in the PBS solution. To do so, I need to measure and/or record the polarisation curve of this alloy in PBS using our potentiostat (Model: METROHM-PGSTAT204). I run the polarisation tests with the recommended default procedure through the potentiostat software (NOVA). This procedure includes two main steps respectively as OCP and linear sweep polarisation. The software of the potentiostat has been already updated and the cable of the potentiostat has been checked by a multimeter.

Following is my procedure for running the experiments:

First, I sand a length of about 10 mm on my Working Electrode (WE). WE is a Ti cylinder with a diameter of about 8 mm and a length of about 120 mm and then, I wash sanded surface with water and Acetone. Second, I arrange the WE with an Ag/AgCl Reference Electrode (RE) and a Pt Counter Electrode (CE) in a triangular configuration (as recommended through the literature). The distance between the electrodes is fixed with some tapes without any connection between the electrodes (this distance is about 8 mm). The three electrode system is then connected to the potentiostat outlets, and is immersed into the PBS (5 mm of the WE length and all the Pt CE length are covered by the solution). Thrid, the time of OCP is set as 2 hrs through NOVA and then, the potential sweep step is arranged to change from -1 V to +1 V (vs. OCP) with a constant rate of 0.001 V/s.

Unfortunately, occasional large fluctuations exist in the OCP through the experiments (Attached). In some experiments, this potential has been partly stabilised and the polarisation step is similar to what is expected. I confirm that the cell is fixed and there are no vibrations/electromagnetic interference around the cell.

Could you please let me know what are the main reasons for these fluctuations? Is the polarisation curve very sensitive to the lab environment?

Regards,

Mohsen.
