I have a DNA fragment, less than 20 nt, containing ammonium as counterion. Is it possible to exchange with a different one, like potassium?

One possibility could be an extensive gel filtration with pure water, then add KCl. Does this work?

Alternatively I heard that ammonium carbonate is volatile: what happens if I add potassium-carbonate in my DNA-ammonium sample and try to remove by heat the ammonium-carbonate?
