R is the best equipped statistical software. Stata is good at some places and is similar to SPSS as well.

@Arul Apart from what David has suggested, JASP is also an alternative for SPSS. It's GUI based license free software.

I once tried PSPP, and the software kept crashing. This was a few years ago. It also didn't have many analyses implemented. I haven't tried it recently. EDIT: I recently tried to use PSPP via pspp4windows. Latest release was October 2020. The program worked fine. But one of the results was incorrect, and different than what SPSS gives. :(

Probably your best bet for something free is a GUI menu driven software package that has R under the hood. Imran Anwar mentioned JASP. I prefer Jamovi. ( https://www.jamovi.org/ ). The two are similar. These have most common analyses implemented.

Using R, through R studio, is also a good approach. R code looks intimidating, but it's really not too bad if you can find clear examples of how people might actually conduct an analysis. I have some suggestions if you go that route. (Unfortunately, a lot of the examples given in the R documentation aren't very helpful unless you already know how to use the software, and the functions are fussy with how they expect the data.) Once you're up to speed on it, R, with all the add-in packages, allows you conduct just about any statistical analysis known to humanity, and to manipulate your data and so on.

I recommend R with specific packages for stats and psychometrics. Also, many analyses may conduct with excel sheets with easy lines of codes (functions).

If you are asking for recommendations, you will have to provide some context. Are you looking for something open source and free? Or do you prefer a proprietary package? What packages are available via your university? What are the main types of analyses you carry out?

Also bear in mind that discussions of the relative merits of different packages are often far less helpful than they could be. Very few people have significant enough experience with multiple packages to make fair comparisons. As a result, the discussion often devolves into something not unlike the schoolyard argument, "My Dad can whip your Dad!" Just replace "Dad" with "stats package". YMMV.

There's a software package called SalStat? Why am I not using that? (Actually, it looks like they stopped development a few years ago, before they released an easy-install package.)

I'd really recommend jamovi. It's free, runs on R in the background, and looks and feels like what SPSS would look like if it were designed today and not in the 1970s. (FYI : I still have my 1976 SPSS manual!).

My suggestion is R using the Rcommander package. It is used by several of my students teaching stat courses. It is a lot like SPSS. Any of the packages from R mentioned above are good. Best wishes, David Booth
