Hi,
I'm trying to make a basic nonpolar solvent for my experiment.
I just mixed 1-decanol and sodium hydride to make an aliphatic base but it became a gel which I didn't expect.
For example, Ca2+ case, I can understand the probability of forming a gel. But, how can Na+1 make a gel?
My understanding about it is the number of 2 unpaired electrons is like functionality of crosslinker so that I was surprised when I saw the gel from them. (even though I assume Na+1 is like f=2, still gel shouldn't ve formed, instead, linear oligomer or polymer should've been formed to my understanding)
Can you please explain why those mixture became a gel?
Thank you so much!
