For the foreseeable future for many reasons scientists are going to publish their best work behind paywalls in subscription-based journals. It is naive to believe that publishers of these journals will allow definitive versions of such articles to be posted on RG or to be freely available to the public. I wonder if a compromise would be to post the definitive articles on read-only sites, where copies cannot be taken from (sorry I am rather vague on the technicalities). Another idea I have is for a comprehensive tightly edited read-only website on a particular topic to be set up, on Cholera for example, where the text of every article that has ever been published on the topic can be stored, if, and only if, it adds to the understanding of this disease. Would the pay-wall masters go along with this?
