When professional decisions are at odds with one's ethical principles!

The simple answer is "never". Being a surgeon, this is easier for me to say because I believe there is no difference between personal and professional ethics.
Besides, if one made decisions contrary to one's core values and beliefs that would lead to no end of personal angst, confusion etc. The term moral schizophrenia has been used to describe such a state.
Personally, I believe this is what autonomy means - not being hindered by external restraints or internal constraints when deciding the right course of action. Being one's own personal boss is just that; though there is a vital corollary to being so - and that is that when one makes decisions implicitly one takes full responsibility for the consequences of such decisions.
I do not think the world of business is any different, that is, if one doesn't buy into the dogma that making money is evil. It just happens that money is the currency of a modern barter system; the intentions and responsibilities behind any business decisions remain the same i.e. ethical.
there must be optimum combination of professional decision and ethics.
