Recently, my health minister mentioned about the use of a genetically modified mosquito, in the control of dengue fever. Having been a victim of DENV, I would be glad for measures to control the disease. Besides, the number of dengue cases has increased quite a lot due to the recent rainy weather. But our present method of control is by fogging. Would we be killing the 'good' GM mosquito, along with the 'bad hats', the disease causing mosquitoes?
Which are the good ones among the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are always considered as a nuisance irrespective, whether they are vectors or non-vectors. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are mainly domestic by habitats. Fogging can not control the breeding completely. The breeding places in and around the dwelling places should be estimated by Container Index and BI. Control of the breeding places for this species is the best way to control them and the disease dengue. lalitha kabilan
