Celebrating World Soil Day: December 5. What are the importance of healthy soil and how can we effectively advocate for sustainable management of soil resources?
Soil is the upper layer of earth, a mixture of organic and inorganic matter, in which plants grow.
It is a finite natural resource. On a human time-scale it is non-renewable. However, despite the essential role that soil plays in human livelihoods, there is a worldwide increase in degradation of soil resources due to inappropriate management practices, population pressure driving unsustainable intensification and inadequate governance over this essential resource.
World Soil Day 2017 activities aim to communicate messages on the importance of soil quality for food security, healthy ecosystems and human well-being.
important to remember this, because the decisions of President Trump in the last days to reduce protected areas, nature reservers (concerning economic interests apparently) show a dangerous development in the States.
Soil is not only essential for food and nutrition security but also has the potential to help mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, pressures on soil resources have already reached critical limits. In addition to being responsible for about 95 per cent of food production, the soil accounts for more than a quarter of the planet's biodiversity and is a major source of pharmaceuticals and plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle.
Many sources indicated their dissatisfaction with the level of soil degradation - estimated to account for about 33 per cent of the world's total has become a source of alarm as a potential threat to food security and could cause large numbers of the world's population to fall into poverty. .
Healthy soil so important, it is provide healthy feed to human ad animals, and in the last years using of chemicals participated in presence of unhealthy food. Regards.
We all know that Organic Production of food would be the best choice. and we all know that to produce all the food that 7,2 billion people need in Organic methods is impossible. But none of that justifies to the soil contamination that we´ve been watching - almost never revealed publicly.
Researching alternatives to food production with no soil contamination is a priority.
Thank you dear Dr. Aurelio Hess for bringing specific focus to the discussion, in the area of food security. I utterly stand with your submission; researching alternatives to food production with no or minimal soil contamination is a major priority.
