You raised an important point. Please let me argue that COVID-19 is still raging and it might be early to say which companies are losers and which are the winners. The ability to utilize digital transformation and so employ novel digital (hybrid) business models are the key factors. Initial signals are still available:

I think this is a very well formulated discussion topic by Prof. Moghavvemi. Also I think that we should start to think differently when discussion such a complex topic. It is a situation which requires immediate and precise definition and response.

In my view we have learned a lot, among others:

• Money is not everything;
• Technology can kill;
• Democracy can cause high costs:
• Nature can also protect itself from our cruel actions against it;
• Solidarity is still a 'baby' in our evolution;
• The socio-economic system is outdated and requires radical updating;
• Innovations must change the short-term goal - direct profit, and concentrate on long-term effects;
• Our enemy is not alone;
• Safety can not be guaranteed for anyone, and many more...

I would say there are no winners, we are all losers. The winner gets it all not just a fraction!

We've had COVID-19 now, around the world, for almost a year. What have we learned about treating COVID effectively to cure the disease and to save lives? Almost nothing. There are no scientific recommendations - other than quarantine, for someone exposed to the virus - other than wait and see. There are no scientific recommendations for someone tests positive but shows few signs or symptoms of disease - other than wait and see. There are no recommendations for patients showing mild, moderate, or severe symptoms of infection - until a crisis occurs and severe medical attention is warranted. Why not? Because the most effective actions at these stages are not to medicate, but to improve the health of the patient before crisis occurs. When the emergency occurs, there is little agreement on the most effective actions. By that time - actions contain significant risks. Frankly, it's shameful negligence. Our medical systems focus is on vaccines - those not yet infected, and on patients in crisis.

As a result, most COVID-19 patients are

simply ignored. Sent home to quarantine. Most recover, out of sight and unobserved by our medical systems, whose attention is elsewhere. However, we haven't learned this lesson yet.

In these new, extra-difficult quarantine conditions of entire countries or specific regions of countries, the adaptability and creativity of individuals in overcoming barriers in their small physical world, often small apartments, the ability to reach the customer and satisfy his needs in the best possible degree despite the lack of physical contact are of great importance. face to face . Therefore, I would like to emphasize, in particular, the great work that has been done by companies in the field of medical services, internal security (e.g. territorial defense forces, police), consulting for business, companies of all types of business and educational consulting, which quickly used the tools already available Internet economy, benefited and developed operational tools in the field of BI. I am very impressed with the activity of some companies in Poland operating in the field of implementation services in the lean management business or BI software for companies. Employees of these companies quickly created operating and training procedures through the network. Next, I will pay attention to the huge creative work that was done by employees in the logistics centers of goods and products with which I know and work as a financial controller on a daily basis. In these magazines, a lot has been done in the field of antivirus safety and disease diagnosis, and further support for the families of people infected during this covid epidemic - 19. I mean the Polish market (a country in Central Europe). The fact that some countries experience a smaller decline in consumption and real GDP in general is a result of their strong psyche, resistance to fear and anxiety, hard work, management efficiency, good organization of processes, efficiency in achieving goals, effective use of capital and entrepreneurship of individuals, especially in businesses that would seem doomed to passivity and extinction in these times of plague and cutoff in physical interpersonal contact. Probably the last time in the world only the Spanish flu had such a large range of impact right after World War I. Among the winners, it seems, are smart companies from the food industry delivering products to the door, companies producing and trading eco vegetables and fruits, and further specializing in dietary supplements. In addition, companies that previously invested in management and remote work software. I would also like to point out that it has suddenly become apparent which countries really have the scientific and research potential to quickly develop, test and implement effective vaccines. We don't know yet what the side effects of the new vaccines will be, and how the mutating virus will actually protect us from these new vaccines. All of this will unfold before our eyes in the weeks and months to come. Thus, the current pandemic is a gigantic test of our countries and nations in terms of mobilizing forces and resources to combat the plague and counteract the effects of covid-19 in the economic, social and psychological areas. For us, scientists, it is also an opportunity / chance to conduct research on countries or companies from certain countries operating in extreme conditions of disease risk, and also imposed conditions of social isolation and permanent inspections in public places.

The SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic caused a deep economic crisis in many countries. The scale of the crisis is determined by the branch and sectoral structure of the economy, the scale of the economic downturn in individual sectors and branches of the economy, the level of industrialization of the economy and equipment with modern ICT and other information technologies, the scope of introduced lockdowns on selected service sectors, the scope of public financial aid granted to economic entities from the financial system state public, etc.

Some of the businesses gained not because they did anything spectacular, but because they just rode a "tidal wave." An example is most consumer staples, but specifically, household goods. When a president of a country that shall remain nameless insinuated that bleach kills coronavirus, people flocked to supermarkets to buy bleach. In some cases, panic buying fuelled buying overstocking toilet paper.

On the other hand, consumer discretionaries; leisure, travel and accommodation recorded heavy losses not because of lack of innovation, but because they faced severe head winds that they could not do anything about.

Proximity activities are linked to the entry of people into the store: if people do not enter there will be no proceeds. The second aspect is linked to Amazon home deliveries, taking increasingly large slices of the same market. Normally, if the store is closed you buy the needed product at the opening but having Amazon, most items are now bought online, and the same sale for the proximity shop will no longer be there. I believe that competition between giants and small proximity activities is impossible.

I agree with Professor Prokopowicz. All the elements that you have mentioned are important for the better or worse financial situation of the company from the point of view of its position in a given country, assuming that such a company is not related to a long supply chain and that the supply centers are not located thousands of kilometers away from the company's sales market . I had the opportunity to work as a financial controller in such a capital company dealing with final assembly and distribution of consumer electronics in Poland, but all deliveries of components came from the other end of the globe, i.e. Southeast Asia. At the time of the largest demand and supply shock that occurred for this company in March and April 2020, it even led to a loss of solvency and a stoppage of production processes for about a quarter. In fact, throughout 2020, due to further forced downtime and repeated disruptions in the supply of raw materials and materials, it was never possible to recover even in 2/3 of the production capacity. This is such a small example, but involving thousands of distribution companies in Central Europe that I know have experienced similar problems with a supply blockage from China and other Far East countries. The pandemic has devastated the "supply chains" of small and medium-sized businesses. Large corporations with a global reach took advantage of their dominant financial and economic position and gained priority in deliveries. Best Regards

It is the sad truth that all hospitality and tourism (H&T) related businesses are experiencing setbacks in 2020, some greater than others, and are trying to navigate out of the storm.
