Hi, I have some left over spin columns from my gel extraction kit. I was wondering if I could use this with my RNA extraction buffer to extract RNA? Has anyone tried this?
I have tried this in the past while isolating plasmid DNA as well as bacterial RNA. In fact, I used columns from different companies and it worked well for me.
The spin column is made up of a silica membrane that is designed to capture the nucleic acid (be it RNA or DNA). It would work the same way in your case as well.
Spin columns are designed to work optimally within its own kit format, but you can still use these columns for RNA extraction. You can try a pilot run and check for yourself. I agree with Abhijeet Singh statement that the efficiency might differ.
I have attached a research article for your reference for more information on this topic.
