I've sent my manuscript to a high impact journal and it took them a year to return the manuscript to me for corrections and it has been a year since then without further updates. Initially, I receive a reply when I send email for update. However, for almost 6 months I receive no reply when I send email to the editorial assistant for update.
I would like to hear from senior colleagues and those who are likely editors of academic journals here the possible reasons for taking such a lengthy time to make a decision on a manuscript and what would you advise me to do.

It seems, unfortunately, that journal is less efficient than you would like! My other thought is that they might be nice people after all and that the topic is rather rare and they have difficulty finding a suitable reviewer who is sufficiently an expert in that matter. There have been a few posts I have seen that some colleagues point out that if a reviewer does not understand the topic, that can produce even worse outcomes!

The journal is a high impact journal you said. Possibly that is the matter. Try to another one.
If you send your manuscript to Free-high impact journal, its possible waiting for a long time. But, if the APC is high, probably it take a short time
