Whenever we irradiated a sample with x-ray(with energy Kev), there is a probability of emission of photoelectron from different core levels. But generally people reports for the XPS peaks for a particular level e.g. for Mn 2p level, O 1s level. Why that is so?
People measure photoelecton spectrum and define maximum intensity peaks for each elements. This depends strongly on the elements itself (ionization potentials of different electronic shells) and on the photon energy (X-ray photon).

Why it is of maximum intensity for the particular core level peak?
The higher core levels may also be of the maximum intensity as the binding energy decreases as we go to the higher levels.

The maximum ionization efficiency can be achieved if photon energy is around 2-3 of the ionization potential for the interesting core shell.

So if we just make a constant photon energy beam irradiation on the sample, then there will not be a single intense peak as it may comprises of several peaks which have nearly same ionization potential??
