Why use FeCl3 solution to remove Ni foam after CVD growth of graphene?

I find many research works using FeCl3 solution to remove Ni foam after CVD growth of graphene. I am wondering the mechanism.

Is it

2Fe3+ + Ni = 2Fe2 + Ni2+

2FeCl3 + 6H2O = 2Fe(OH)3 + 6H+ + 6Cl-

2H+ + Ni = Ni2+ + H2

or any other reactions?

In a simple form, it can be treated as following:

2FeCl3 + Ni = 2FeCl2 + NiCl2.
