I’m currently working on seismic characterization of site effects by seismic ambient noise. Data are recorded by 3 components seismometers. To compute the spectral amplitude of the noise in the horizontal direction, many different ways exists to combine the horizontal measurements made in the 2 orthogonal directions (H1,H2). All of them seems acceptable to me (my preference is for quadratic mean) but one: the geometric mean, i.e. sqrt(H1*H2).I don’t understand the rationale behind it. Could someone explain it?
