Dear all,
Can someone please help me finding the reason why I have about 20% of total bacterial population (studied via 16S) as cyanobacteria in the biofilters which is used for the treatment of oil sand process wastewater. Their percentage 0.23% in the beginning but then increased to more than 20% after treatment of 8 hours in all the samples. Is it that algal biofilms are being formed and the match is due to plastids (e.g. endosymbiont theory)? Or do cyanos really play some role in degradation?

PS: the biofilter is just sand column
Actually there are some articles which reported the predominance of cynobacteria in hydrocarbon rich waste water treatment. May be you can look into such articles.

I have seen these articles before but i am looking for precise answer! Do you have any such answer based on your experience?
The most important part is: how after 8 hours, the abundance was increased this much.
