My suggestion is to make sure that the maximum allocated BW for each OFDM symbol in your experiment is less than or equal to half sampling frequency of transmission.

Should I apply this to the pure OFDM symbol or after considering the cyclic prefix insertion?

You have to consider the combined OFDM symbol (pure + CP) as the CP occupies a specific part in the offered BW.
