What is Philosophy, and Why Should I Study It? Why should a student apply to those who intend to go into philosophy as a career: paid vacations, decent income, love of wisdom, great use in education and/or in employment, to learn how to write clearly, with a critical attitude?
Philosophy is "love of wisdom". It is the most general science, i.e. it has an objective claim and is - as active philosophizing - reflective thinking about the world and the forces that move it. It is also thinking about man, - as he is and as he should be, it is reflecting about beings, manifestations and possibilities of the material and mental existence and its relations. - I have here only made a suggestion for a working definition. I am a little sceptical about those utterances that say no one knows what philosophy is.
Philosophers usually have no difficulty in describing their field of work, even if such descriptions show differences.
As an educator and social scientist, I see myself only as a guest in philosophy, but I am happy to take part in its feast - always with spiritual gain.
