Is it true that mixing lime with sugar gives a sticky substance? if so, why? does it have anything to do with aldol condensation of claisen-schmidt condensation?
to find out, I ran a small experiment mixing plaster-grade unslaked lime powder with nearly (room temperature)saturated colorless transparent sugar solution prepared with food-grade sugar and tap water. I found out, the substance gradually turns into chocolate-brown color within a matter of few days if the lime powder can be kept into suspension state. to speed up reaction, I put in under direct sunlight, (slightly warmer than ambient), enclosed in a 250 ml transparent plastic beverage bottle (possibly made of PET). the lime volume was about 1/10th of solution volume. when the lime was precipitated , the solution color and consistency was comparable with honey.
