As I searched, it is because NS2 simulator last release was in 2009 and there is no maintained or updated version since then, and low community support.
NS-2 was discontinued in terms of developer support, new contribution to code and removal of past bugs. My graduate students informed me that it had been started being reported on Internet as early as 2013 that reputed journals have stopped taking submissions where simulations were conducted in ns-2. I switched over to ns-3 for my graduate students since then although its code base is still not as rich as ns-2.
