I am writing a paper on the effect of crude oil on different size classes of D. magna. It is very logical that the higher concentrations have more damaging effects on Cladocerans, but what is the mechanism? Is it because of feeding on toxicans or oil destructive effect on D. magna body parts?

This may be because of a number of factors including:
1. Decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration and related degradation in water quality parameters.
2. Elimination of primary producers (food organisms) from the area.
3. Feeding and absorption of oil and its residues by the organism.
4. All these may result in the suppression of basic physiological activities in the plankton.

In the paper cited at the end of my message it has been showed that oil pollution can change the species composition and eliminate the dominant grazers among plankton which results in the increasing abundance of primary producers. Do you have any literature about elimination of primary producers?
Also I have noticed an direct effect of oil to cladocerans carapace - damaging and deforming it - is there any papers about the oil pollution effect on live tissues/cells?

Your observations are interesting. Species and populations respond differentially to oil pollution and thus such a pollution may change the species composition over an area. Well, this may eliminate the dominant grazers among zooplankton, subsequently resulting in an increased abundance of phytoplankton. However, this depends on the concentration and toxicity of the oil and its fractions.
