I have an project for treat the waste from tea factory, mainly the process is biological treatment which used aeration & MBR (membrane bio-reactor). The MLSS is still around 5.000 mg/L but the viscosity of the sludge is very high. I've done filter paper test, but there is no permeate came out from the paper. Any suggestion and comments would be usefull. Thank you
Please clarify your question, as your MLSS is normal then what is the problem concerning viscosity? The sludge must be viscous as it contains bacterial cells/solids(colloids).
I do not think what you mentioned is true, because the MBR sludge acts as a non-
Newtonian fluid by increasing the mixed-liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration, the viscosity of sludge increases exponentially. This results in mass transfer limitations for both the oxygen and substrate, which increases aeration costs as well as causing extensive membrane fouling. On the other side, at lower MLSS concentrations, the more specific surface area is available for the uptake of a substrate and enzyme production, and the enzymatic activity is higher. Thus, when operating at the lower SRT response of the system in degradation of xenobiotic waste should be faster.
