Hello,
The monkey virus SV40 contaminated an unknown number of batches of the Polio vaccine administered between 1955 and 1963. Since then, SV40 has been found to transform cell lines and cause tumors in laboratory animals.
Why then, is SV40 genetic material or antigen not tested for regularly in human tumors? American baby boomers who may have received the contaminated vaccine have a relatively high rate of cancer. Why not make SV40 testing part of the standard procedure for characterizing tumors in this age group? We certainly have the technology to do so.
Additionally, it is still unknown if SV40 can be vertically transmitted to offspring through genome integration. Why then, are pediatric and young adult tumors also not regularly tested for SV40?
Thanks!
