Also, the 2'OH on the ribose of RNA is reactive. It is absent in DNA. At above-neutral pH, particularly with metal ions, it will attack the neighbouring phosphodiester bond and produce a cyclic phosphate, causing a break in the strand. RNases merely speed this reaction up.
