Why iron amalgam hardly forms but gold and sodium readily form amalgam?

Mercury can amalgamate both very active and very noble metals, with exception of Fe, Pt, W,Ta.

Why and how Mercury can combine with such diverse array of metals but not these ones? Some answers that refer to softness of metals that combine with mercury, bot how yield point or ductility of metals can be related to their chemical reactivity?
