I am trying to simulate high velocity impact of rigid spherical projectile on a rectangular plate using Abaqus Dynamic Explicit.

Diameter : 12 mm
Mass : 7.05g, rigid
Velocity : 175 m/s
Plate details
Dimensions : 120 X 120 X 1 (mm)
Material model : Johnson - Cook
Failure strain defined : 0.55
Boundary Conditions
All degrees of freedom fixed for the four faces along the thickness.
Problem
Simulated using solid and shell elements with same parameters for different mesh sizes. There is a considerable difference between internal energies obtained for solid and shell elements for all the mesh sizes simulated.
Apart from that the results keep on changing with the mesh size, no mesh convergence.
What could be the possible reason?
You may reduce mass / velocity (or both) and look for linear response and convergence, before entering into non-linear strains and failure criteria. Match the results at low strain levels. Shell and Solid may behave differently under high strain. Mesh convergence also to be established for linear / low-strain levels, before attempting high strains.

I have performed mesh convergence test, results are converging for low velocities but not for high velocities. For low velocities energy absorption is same for models with solid and shell elements but at higher velocities there is significant difference.
