I modified PES membranes with nanoparticles (nanosilver, graphene, halloysite). They were used in UF for WWTP effluent treatment. After filtration, all membranes exhibited more negative zeta potential comparing with clean ones? Contact angle was lower for fouled membranes. As for example clean membrane 73 degrees and -30mV, fouled 56 degrees and -50mV.
If they are fouled then material has adsorbed onto the membrane - i.e., your nanoparticles. So the zeta potential should change according to the zeta potential of your nanoparticles.
Thank you for your answer. Nanoparticles were immobilized in membranes. Initial zeta potential for nanocomposite membrane was -30mV , then after filtration of wastewater effluent changed to -50.
I expected opposite trend. Generally fouled membrane reveals less negative zeta potential due to foulants charge in feed water.
Hi Gabriela Kamińska - can you measure the zeta potential of the particles from your feed water before the membrane? You expect the charge of the wastewater particles to be positive. Often 'organic components' in wastewater are negatively charged, unless additives to modify charge have been added.
