Hi,

While solving Euler's equation (inviscid flow), convergence cannot be obtained without addition of artificial viscosity terms or using upwinding scheme. Upwinding scheme itself results into addition of numerical diffusion terms and therefore is similar to artificial viscosity formulation in that particular sense.

Physically I understand that viscous terms are required to represent some kind of frictional dissipation but can someone please explain me the mathematical issues if discretized equations are solved without addition of artificial or introducing numerical diffusion?

Does it have to do something with Scarborogh criteria?
