We have 500 ml Q sepharose in 20% ethanol in our lab. which is forming solid mass when we store it 4 oC after using. Is it a common property of this resin or it has been expired. It separates after mixing. I believe if it is a positively charged resin, equal charges should repel each other or I'm suspecting it is aggregating due to storage in ethanol which might be initiating inter-molecular interactions.
I think the resin just sediments to form a rather firmly packed block after prolonged storage, but it still consists of individual beads and you should still be able to resuspend it by gently stirring it with a glass rod or inverting it many times.
If you clean it well and use the protocols for that (and for storage) provided by the manufacturer you should be able to keep the resin in good shape for really long time.
